Meet Heather

How I stumbled across school social work…

Hello! I'm Heather, and my journey into social work began unexpectedly during my college years. Originally a theater major, I found myself drawn to the real-world impact of working in domestic violence shelters in New York. It was there that I discovered social work as a calling—a perfect fit for my passion for helping others and my lived experiences.

After completing my Master's degree in Social Work, I embarked on a fulfilling career in the child welfare field. I started as a Child Safety Specialist and eventually became a supervisor. My commitment to this role extended beyond my initial contract, driven by my deep love for the work and the positive impact I could make in children's lives. In 2021, I made the transition to school social work—a decision influenced by my role as a foster parent. Balancing work and family life became essential, and the school setting offered the perfect blend of continuing to work with children while prioritizing quality time with my own.

My Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Social Work, specializing in child welfare, have profoundly shaped my approach to school social work. While formal education provided a foundation, it was my hands-on experience and personal research that truly honed my understanding and skills. Transitioning from the high-stress environment of child welfare required a shift in mindset, from a formal and legal approach to one that is nurturing and supportive within the school community.

In my practice, I find creativity and meeting students where they are crucial. I believe in the power of natural consequences and recognize the importance of addressing students' basic needs and emotional regulation to foster a conducive learning environment.

Moving forward, I am eager to share my experiences and insights with others in the field. Through creative classroom lessons, engaging worksheets, and thoughtful classroom decor, I aim to support fellow educators and school social workers. My passion lies not only in creating aesthetically pleasing educational materials but also in fostering a supportive community where every child can thrive. Join me on this journey as we navigate the challenges and joys of school social work together!

But wait, who am I outside of school?

When I'm not at school, my life is pure chaos, but I love it and I would not trade it for anything! I have been a foster mom since 2018 and have welcomed 13 amazing kids into my home. Each one has taught me so much! My biological daughter keeps me super busy with her social life and competitive cheerleading. She's fabulous and so sassy!

Oh, and did I mention I have five dogs? So yeah, obviously I have lost my mind. I live in a zoo, but we love dogs! Five though?! Definitely too many… oops!

I am also obsessed with home decor and renovations. There's nothing like transforming a space into something beautiful and functional. My house looks nothing like the day I bought it and I am so proud because I designed all of it! My dream? Living on a lake in upstate New York, surrounded by nature and close to my family and friends, who I miss all the time.

These experiences shape who I am and bring a bit of my real-world chaos and love into everything I do!
